Biofeedback-Based Adaptive Furniture Design: Sensor Technologies for Therapeutic Interiors

Sensors, integrated with biofeedback systems, AI, and IoT technologies, provide adaptive features to furniture by offering real-time feedback to users' needs. In this context, using sensors in adaptive furniture has emerged as a contemporary research area, as it may influence not only physical requirements but also psychological well-being. This study asks: "Do sensors in adaptive furniture create therapeutic effects that support psychological well-being, and how do these effects differ by sensor type?" User interaction-oriented sensors (pressure, force, touch, motion), identified through purposive sampling, were evaluated using visual and printed secondary data sources. Data were analyzed under the themes of data type collected, furniture response, and therapeutic effect. Results indicate that pressure sensors contribute to postural awareness; force sensors to physical comfort; touch sensors to the sense of security; and motion sensors to the perception of safety and support for independent living.
