Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of fractal geometry and the spatial philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to address sensory challenges in contemporary high-density urban environments. By bridging quantitative morphology and qualitative critique, the research operationalizes abstract philosophical concepts into measurable spatial attributes. Using a comparative case study, it examines the bottom-up generative fractals characteristic of Tokyo neighborhoods and contrasts them with the top-down pseudo-fractals of the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. The methodology integrates the box-counting method (D), network branching ratios, and space syntax. Findings reveal that Tokyo’s low branching ratio and high connectivity foster permeability, whereas Dubai’s hierarchical, tree-like structure reflects centralized control. The paper proposes a “Fractal Politics” framework to interpret how spatial structures enable adaptive experiences or reinforce systemic control. Ultimately, this research provides an integrated methodological approach for interdisciplinary urban studies, demonstrating how spatial complexity supports urban resilience and multi-layered perception.
