The Colour of Space: Mapping the Urban Conservation Zones of Samsun

Colour in architecture is not only an aesthetic element but also a determinant of social memory and urban identity. In this context, the main subject of the study is to examine the connection of the colour-form-material relationship with the space of the registered buildings located in Samsun urban conservation zones numbered I, II and III. Methodologically, a data set was prepared by using geographical information systems within the scope of the registered buildings documented by fieldwork. Thus, the relationship between prominent colour uses and urban space was revealed through visual analysis and mapping techniques. it is aimed to establish a spatial connection. In this respect, the study, which reveals the colour issue with quantitative data, makes an important contribution to the literature. In addition, it is aimed that the study can form a basis for future restoration processes and contribute to the development of conservation policies. As a result of the study, the relationship between building and space is revealed and the effect of the use of colour on the urban space of the buildings under protection is revealed.
